William Bartram Scenic Highway follows the St. Johns River side
William Bartram Scenic & Historic Highway follows SR 13 along a quieter St. Johns River side south of Jacksonville.
William Bartram Scenic & Historic Highway gives the St. Johns River a slower road story.
The route follows State Road 13 south of Jacksonville through a part of St. Johns County where the river, old trees, hammocks, palmetto, parks, and neighborhood stops sit close to the road. It is a different Northeast Florida feel from beach A1A, downtown Jacksonville, or the St. Augustine tourist core.
The name matters too. William Bartram traveled through the Southeast in the 1700s and wrote about plants, animals, rivers, and Native communities. A modern drive cannot carry all of that history by itself, but the label is a clue. This is a corridor where natural history, settlement, river travel, and today’s suburban growth all sit near each other.
Give the drive a little patience. Check current traffic, park access, and riverfront stops before going. Some of the best parts here are not dramatic. They are the shade, the bend in the road, the river appearing between houses, and the feeling that Northeast Florida has more than one pace.
