Moore Memorial Park keeps Mims' civil rights story visible

Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Memorial Park in Mims keeps a hard Florida civil rights story tied to a museum, replica home, and quiet grounds.

Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Memorial Park gives Mims one of Florida’s most important civil rights places.

The center of the story is the Moore family homesite. Harry T. Moore and Harriette V. Moore were educators and civil rights workers. On Christmas night in 1951, a bomb exploded at their home. The park keeps that history in public view with a cultural center, museum exhibits, a replica home, a research library, a Walk of Freedom, and landscaped grounds.

It is a serious stop, but it does not feel like only a sad stop. It also shows how local people, teachers, churches, voters, schools, and families fit into the wider civil rights story. The grounds give visitors room to slow down and take it in.

Check Brevard County’s current hours and tour details before visiting. Bring the address with you, because this is not a highway-side attraction that explains itself from the road. It is a place to enter with time and care.
