Bumper 8 started Cape Canaveral's launch story
The first rocket launched from Cape Canaveral in 1950, long before Space Coast launch days became part of local life.
The Space Coast story did not begin with a giant crowd and a moon shot.
It began in a much rougher way on July 24, 1950, when Bumper 8 became the first rocket launched from Cape Canaveral. The rocket was part V-2 and part WAC Corporal, built for early test work. The place was still new as a launch range, with ocean downrange and enough open space to make testing possible.
There is a very Florida detail tucked into the start. Bumper 7 had been set for launch first, but humidity and delays helped cause a valve problem. Bumper 8 went next and got the first-launch place in the record.
That small start makes later Brevard history easier to feel. The big visitor complex, causeway crowds, launch apps, and Space Coast identity all grew from early tests like this one.
If you are planning a launch day, check NASA and local viewing details before you drive. If you are reading the place as history, remember that Cape Canaveral was a testing ground before it became a symbol.
