Sarasota's modern school made shade part of the design

Sarasota's modern design story gives local homes and small buildings a historic layer built around sun, shade, air, climate, and Gulf Coast place.

Sarasota has a modern design story that fits the climate instead of fighting it.

The Sarasota School grew from local designers working with Gulf Coast light, heat, breeze, shade, and the way people live near the water. The best-known work used roof lines, glass, screens, deep shade, open rooms, and indoor-outdoor space.

That is why a house or small building in Sarasota can look simple at first and still be worth a second look. Some places carry a midcentury idea, not just an old address. The Umbrella House on Lido Shores is one famous example of using shade as a real feature, not a trim piece.

For owners and buyers, the practical side is preservation. Some local buildings tied to this school may fit a historic review path. If a place has that design history, ask before replacing windows, changing the roofline, removing screens, or treating it like any other remodel. The character may be part of the value.
