Sanford Auto Train turns the long Florida drive into a rail plan
Amtrak's Auto Train makes Sanford a special Florida arrival point for people who want their own car without the full I-95 drive.
Sanford has one of Florida’s most unusual travel doors: you can arrive by train and still bring your own car.
Amtrak’s Auto Train runs between Lorton, Virginia, and Sanford. The idea is simple, but it changes the trip. Your car rides in an enclosed auto carrier while you ride the train. For people coming from the Mid-Atlantic or heading back that way, it can turn a long I-95 drive into an overnight rail trip with the car waiting at the other end.
The detail to respect is the vehicle check. Amtrak has size rules, check-in times, and vehicle types that need to be handled before the trip. A normal car is one lane. A van, truck, SUV, motorcycle, trailer, small boat, or special vehicle can have a different size and timing check.
Plan this like both a train trip and a car trip. Book the vehicle at the same time as the passenger fare, read the vehicle rules before packing, and leave room in the day for check-in and unloading. Once you roll out of Sanford, you are already close to Orlando, the Space Coast, Daytona Beach, and Central Florida highways.
