Lion Country Safari keeps western Palm Beach's drive-through zoo story
Lion Country Safari near Loxahatchee keeps a 1960s drive-through animal park story alive in western Palm Beach County.
Lion Country Safari gives western Palm Beach County a very different feel from the ocean side.
The park opened in 1967 with a drive-through idea built around seeing animals from the car. That fit the Florida road-trip era perfectly. Families were already moving through the state by highway, and this turned the car itself into part of the attraction.
It also helps explain the west side of Palm Beach County. Not everything here is island wealth, downtown towers, or beach traffic. Out near Loxahatchee, the land opens up, the roads feel wider, and a place like Lion Country Safari makes more sense. It belongs to a Florida where visitor stops grew around distance, novelty, and room to spread out.
Check current tickets, route rules, animal areas, heat, storms, and vehicle limits before going. It is still an active animal park, so current care and visitor rules matter more than old nostalgia.
