Loxahatchee Refuge is Palm Beach's Everglades edge
Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge gives inland Palm Beach County a major Everglades landscape.
Palm Beach County is often pictured through beaches, cities, and golf roads. Loxahatchee Refuge shows the inland edge.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service places the refuge west of Boynton Beach and describes more than 145,000 acres. The habitat includes wet prairies, sawgrass ridges, sloughs, tree islands, cattail areas, and a cypress swamp. The refuge also supports more than 250 bird species.
Palm Beach County has a bigger frame here. The Everglades are not only far south or far west. They sit close enough to the metro area that a resident can drive from city streets to a huge wetland landscape.
Check USFWS before visiting. Confirm hours, entrance details, trail status, paddling, visitor center information, closures, and weather. Bring water, sun protection, and patience. A refuge visit is best when the pace is set by the marsh, not by a tight schedule.
