Florida Turnpike started as the Sunshine State Parkway

Florida's Turnpike is not just a toll road; it began as the Sunshine State Parkway and still shapes long drives between Orlando and South Florida.

Florida’s Turnpike can feel like just another toll road until you see how much of the state it quietly ties together.

The road began in the 1950s, when the first 110-mile stretch opened in 1957 under the Sunshine State Parkway name. Before that, many Central Florida travelers used U.S. 27 for north-south trips. The Turnpike later grew into one of the main ways people move between Orlando, the Treasure Coast, Palm Beach County, Broward, and Miami-Dade.

That history still shows up in normal life. A family heading to the airport, a retiree driving between coasts, a delivery route, a college move, a beach week, and a storm-season trip can all end up on the same toll-road spine.

Plan the Turnpike like a long road, not a mystery charge. Check toll method, service plazas, fuel, weather, 511 alerts, and the exact exit before the trip. The drive feels easier when the toll account and rest stops are part of the plan from the start.
