Rickenbacker Causeway is Miami's island drive with a toll
Rickenbacker Causeway is the toll road into Virginia Key, Key Biscayne, Crandon Park, and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park.
Rickenbacker Causeway is one of Miami’s drives where the road feels like part of the outing.
It is the only land access to Crandon Park, the Village of Key Biscayne, and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. It also reaches Virginia Key and Hobie Island. That means beach plans, park plans, bike rides, marina trips, school traffic, island errands, and weekend traffic all share the same basic doorway.
The toll is part of the plan. Miami-Dade lists SunPass and Toll-By-Plate rates for the causeway, and Toll-By-Plate can bring an invoice fee. That does not need to be a big deal, but it should not be a surprise after the trip.
The road asks for patience. It has water views, bridges, cyclists, runners, park entrances, beach crowds, and weather that can make a simple afternoon feel less simple. Before going, check the toll setup, park status, parking, bike plans, beach conditions, and any causeway notices.
Rickenbacker is not just the way to Key Biscayne. It is part of how Miami turns a short drive into an island day.
