Florida HOV lane habits need a current sign check
Florida changed its HOV lane law in 2025, so old carpool-lane habits should be checked against current signs, toll rules, and FDOT traveler updates.
Old HOV lane advice can age badly in Florida.
Senate Bill 1662 became Chapter 2025-155 and took effect July 1, 2025. The Senate bill analysis says the bill repealed Florida’s HOV lane law, including the old authority tied to HOV decals and certain HOV toll-lane or express-lane exemptions.
That does not mean every lane on the road suddenly feels simple. South Florida drivers may still see express lanes, managed lanes, toll signs, lane-control signs, construction changes, and old habits from years of commuting. A diamond symbol, toll reader, overhead sign, or flexible post setup can mean different things depending on the corridor.
The practical move is to trust the current road, not memory. Read the signs where you are driving. Check FDOT or Florida 511 before a commute that depends on managed lanes. If a transponder, toll account, rental car, or old HOV decal question is involved, treat it as a current-account check instead of a rule you remember from last year.
Florida driving changes by corridor. The sign in front of you wins.
