Florida REAL ID documents come before the license appointment

A Florida driver license or ID errand can stall if the identity, Social Security, and address papers are not ready first.

A Florida license appointment is easier when the paper stack is ready before you walk in.

REAL ID rules are about proving who you are, your Social Security number, and where you live. The exact list can change by person. A new resident, a name-change applicant, a noncitizen applicant, and someone replacing a lost card may not need the same set of papers.

The address part trips people up. A lease, deed, utility bill, bank statement, insurance record, or other accepted proof may need to match the address you want on the record. If your name changed, bring the link in the chain, not just the new name you use now.

Start with FLHSMV’s document checklist and the county tax collector or driver license office appointment page. Bring more proof than you think you need, keep originals or accepted copies where the office asks for them, and do not count on a phone photo to solve a missing paper.
