Florida REAL ID office trip starts with original documents

A Florida REAL ID license or ID office trip works better when identity, Social Security, name-link, and address papers are gathered before the appointment.

The little star on a Florida license can hide a bigger paper hunt.

For an in-office REAL ID license or ID card, Florida drivers usually need original papers that prove identity, Social Security number, and home address. A name change can add another layer. The papers need to connect the birth name, old name, and current name.

The address part is where people often get caught. A current driver license or ID card is not enough as proof of home address. Utility bills, lease papers, mortgage papers, voter registration, vehicle registration, and similar papers may work, but the current FLHSMV list should be checked first.

Check the current list before you go. Then make two small piles. One pile proves who you are. The other proves where you live in Florida. If your name changed, add the certified marriage certificate, divorce order, or court order that links the names.

The office trip feels easier when the papers are gathered before the appointment. It is not glamorous, but it beats learning at the counter that the missing proof is sitting at home.
