Florida new resident license swap still has a vision check

A new Florida resident with a valid out-of-state license may avoid written and road exams, but the license visit still has identity, address, and vision steps.

Moving to Florida does not always mean taking the driving test again.

New residents have a 30-day clock for getting a Florida driver license after establishing residency. A person with a valid out-of-state license may be able to skip the written and road tests. The office visit is still real. The vision test still applies. So do identity, Social Security, and Florida address documents.

That is where people get tripped up. A valid license from another state can help with the exam side. It is not the same as having every Florida document ready. Name changes, address proof, immigration or lawful-status papers, and appointment rules can all change the visit.

Before going to the office, use the current FLHSMV “What to Bring” lane for your situation. Bring original or accepted documents, not a hopeful stack of maybes. If your old license is close to expiration, lost, or tied to a different name, check the page before counting on a smooth swap.

Many moves do not require a full driving do-over. The vision and document checks still deserve a real plan.
