Florida driver exam language change belongs before test day

Florida announced that driver license knowledge and skills exams would move to English-only testing in 2026, so test-day language planning should start early.

This is a detail to check before someone is already standing at the counter.

On January 30, 2026, FLHSMV announced a driver exam change. Starting Friday, February 6, 2026, driver license knowledge and skills exams would be given only in English. The notice applies to all license classes, including oral exams. It also says translation help would no longer be allowed for knowledge or skills exams.

That is a big planning detail for families, new residents, and anyone helping a first-time driver study. Some older pages may still be easy to find in search. Check the current FLHSMV exam page, the press notice, and the local appointment office before test day.

The best response is not panic. It is practice. Use the current Florida handbook and practice materials. If English is not the driver’s strongest language, start earlier. Read the road-sign words out loud. Make sure the person taking the test understands the directions they may hear at the office or during the road test.

A language change should not be a surprise at the window. Put it in the plan while there is still time to practice.
