Bulow Plantation keeps Flagler's sugar story in the woods

Bulow Plantation near Flagler Beach preserves sugar-mill remains tied to East Florida plantation history.

Bulow Plantation is a place where the woods do not hide the history.

Florida State Parks describes the 150-acre site as a monument to the rise and fall of sugar plantations in East Florida. The park’s BulowVille history traces the plantation to land acquired in 1821 along what became Bulow Creek. The old mill remains keep part of that story visible.

Old sugar sites are not just picturesque. They are tied to plantation land, forced labor, conflict, and loss. The broken walls and mill remains are interesting because they make that past harder to ignore.

That is why the stop works best at a slower pace. The trail and shade can feel peaceful, but the site is asking you to read the history, not just look at old stone.

Before visiting, check the current park page for access, trail conditions, fees, and hours. Then read the signs and give the old mill area time. It is a quiet stop, but it carries more than a quiet story.
