Atlantic sailfish is the state saltwater fish

Florida's state saltwater fish is the Atlantic sailfish, which ties the state symbol list to blue water, billfish, and careful fishing rules.

The Atlantic sailfish gives Florida’s state-symbol list a little speed and blue water.

State law names the Atlantic sailfish as Florida’s official state saltwater fish. The big first dorsal fin gives the fish its name. Even if you do not fish for one, the shape is easy to remember once you have seen it on a sign, dock, tournament shirt, or marina wall.

The practical side belongs right beside the pretty side. Billfish rules can involve size, possession, federal-water questions, permits, and release guidance. A charter captain may handle that for a guest, but the angler should still know that a state symbol is not a free-for-all.

For a visitor, enjoy the artwork and dock talk. For a fishing trip, check FWC and federal-water details before the boat leaves. The fish is part of Florida color, but the water still runs on current rules.
