Cypress Gardens started Florida's theme park story
Winter Haven's Cypress Gardens opened in 1936 and gave Florida its first theme park before the big Central Florida park era.
Before Central Florida became known for huge parks, Winter Haven had Cypress Gardens.
Dick and Julie Pope founded Cypress Gardens in 1936. Florida Memory records it as the state’s first theme park. At first, the draw was a garden on a lake. Then came water-ski shows, boat rides, hoop-skirted Southern Belles, and photographs that traveled far beyond Polk County.
The place knew how to make a picture. A visitor could see flowers, water, costumes, and a show without needing a complicated plan. That mix helped shape the way Florida sold itself to travelers: warm weather, bright color, a little performance, and a story to take home.
The old park closed in 2009. LEGOLAND Florida opened on the site two years later, and the original botanical gardens remain at the heart of the property. Check current admission and garden access before you go, especially if your main plan is history instead of rides.
