Stranahan House keeps Fort Lauderdale's river start close

Stranahan House on the New River helps Fort Lauderdale feel older than the beach, boats, and high-rise skyline.

Fort Lauderdale can look new if you only see the condos, yachts, and beach traffic. Stranahan House pulls the city back toward the river.

The museum traces the building to 1901, when Frank Stranahan built it by the New River. Its early uses included a trading post and community hall before it became the Stranahan family home. That is a strong local clue: before Fort Lauderdale became a modern coastal city, the river was the practical center of town life.

The house also keeps Ivy Stranahan in the story. Her civic work helps the site feel less like a single-family house tour and more like a window into early Broward County community life.

If you visit, check current tour times and ticket details before showing up. The house is not a huge stop, but it changes how downtown Fort Lauderdale reads. The city feels older once you know where to look.
