Sebring Raceway keeps Hendricks Field under the engine noise

Sebring International Raceway is a racing landmark, but its old Hendricks Field air-base story still sits under the track.

Sebring is famous for racing, but the track did not start as a track.

Sebring International Raceway traces its roots to Hendricks Field, a World War II Army Air Forces training base near Sebring. The airport history also points to the old B-17 pilot-school role. After the war, the airfield became part of the local airport, and the runways and roads helped turn the site into one of Florida’s great racing places.

That backstory changes the way the raceway feels. The engine noise, concrete, and endurance-race crowd sit on top of an older military and aviation map. Highlands County does not have many places where that much Florida history, speed, and open inland space meet in one spot.

If you plan a visit, check the raceway calendar, ticket rules, parking, and event traffic first. On a race weekend, Sebring is not a casual pop-in. On a quieter day, the Hendricks Field story is the part that helps the place feel bigger than a motorsports venue.
