Lake Placid murals turn Highlands history into a walk

Lake Placid's mural trail gives Highlands County a colorful downtown walk tied to local history, small details, and public art.

Lake Placid found a simple way to make local history easy to notice: put it on the walls.

The Lake Placid mural project started in the 1990s. The town now promotes itself as a walkable outdoor art gallery with dozens of large murals. Visit Sebring points to extra details too: some murals include sound and hidden items, and there are decorated trash containers and bird plaques around town.

The murals are more than decoration. They turn a downtown walk into a small treasure hunt, especially for families or visitors who might not stop for a formal history museum. The art gives Highlands County a bright, human-scale story between the lakes and citrus country.

Before going, check the current mural map or visitor information. Then slow down enough to look for the details. Lake Placid is more fun when you treat the murals as a walk, not a checklist.
