Rental-car tolls need a plan before the airport exit
Florida rental-car tolls can run through the rental company, a transponder, or plate billing, so the choice belongs before the first toll road.
Florida airport trips can put a rental car on a toll road almost right away.
That is easy to miss at the counter. A visitor may be thinking about luggage, hotel check-in, or the fastest route out of Orlando, Miami, Tampa, or Fort Lauderdale. Then the road signs start offering toll choices before the toll plan is clear.
Rental companies can handle tolls in different ways. Some use their own toll program. Some pass along tolls and service fees. Some drivers bring a personal transponder, but the rental-car rules and account settings still need attention. Plate billing can also reach the rental company first, not the person behind the wheel.
Before leaving the garage, read the rental toll section, decide whether to use the rental program, and make sure any personal transponder is allowed and set up for the rental plate. It is not the most exciting part of the trip, but it keeps the first bill from becoming a surprise later.
