Pelican Island starts the refuge story

Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge near Sebastian gives the Treasure Coast a major conservation landmark.

Pelican Island is small on the map, but it carries a large conservation story.

The refuge near Sebastian is known as the first national wildlife refuge in the United States. That gives Indian River County a landmark that is more than a pretty coastal stop. It helps explain why bird protection, habitat, and public access are part of the Treasure Coast identity.

The protected island itself is not a place to wander onto. The visit is about the refuge trails, overlooks, interpretive signs, and the larger shoreline setting. Wildlife viewing can be wonderful, but it depends on season, weather, time of day, and the animals.

Start with the USFWS refuge page before you go. Check access, trail status, hours, rules, and current notices. Bring binoculars if you have them, but bring patience either way. This is a place where slowing down is part of the point.
