Cars and driving

Loop Road in Big Cypress is a swamp drive, not a shortcut

Loop Road is a scenic Big Cypress drive where the road, water, wildlife, and season matter more than shaving time off the Tamiami Trail.

Loop Road looks like a little side road on the map. It is better to treat it like a slow look into Big Cypress.

The National Park Service describes Loop Road as a 24-mile drive south of the current Tamiami Trail path. It runs through mostly cypress swamp habitat and reaches across parts of Collier, Monroe, and Miami-Dade counties. The road can feel dry and easy in one season and much wetter in another.

That is why this road earns its own space. It shows a different South Florida than the beach, the interstate, or the wide city boulevard. You see swamp, water, shade, old road plans, and the sense that the Everglades edge is not empty land. It is a living place with its own pace.

Before driving it, check the preserve page for road conditions and closures. Bring water, fuel, and patience. Pull completely out of the way before stopping for wildlife or photos, and let the road be what it is: a slow drive through a place that should not be rushed.
