Letchworth-Love Mounds holds Jefferson's tallest old ground
Letchworth-Love Mounds Archaeological State Park preserves Florida's tallest Native American ceremonial mound in Jefferson County.
Letchworth-Love Mounds asks for a different pace than most roadside history stops.
Florida State Parks identifies the park as the home of Florida’s tallest Native American ceremonial mound. The mound was built roughly 1,100 to 1,800 years ago. The park setting is quiet, with picnicking, birding, walking, and interpretive displays. The main point is respect for the mound and the people who built it.
For Jefferson County, this is a deep-history anchor. Monticello has old buildings and courthouse-square charm, but this park reaches much farther back than the town map. It reminds visitors that Florida history did not begin with statehood, railroads, plantations, or tourism.
If you visit, check current park hours and conditions first. Stay on marked public areas, read the interpretive material, and do not treat the mound like a playground. The place is simple, but it carries real weight.
