FAMU started with a small class on Tallahassee's hill
Florida A&M University began in Tallahassee with 15 students and two instructors, then grew into one of the capital city's defining institutions.
Florida A&M University is a big part of Tallahassee now. Its start was small enough to picture.
FAMU traces its founding to October 3, 1887. The first classes had 15 students and two teachers. Thomas DeSaille Tucker, an attorney from Pensacola, was the first president. In 1891, the school received land-grant money for farm and mechanical arts work. In 1953, Florida A&M College became Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.
That story helps explain why FAMU feels woven into the city. The school sits near state offices, neighborhoods, game-day streets, family visits, graduations, research, music, and health care. It is part of the capital’s daily map.
If you visit campus, check the current visitor and parking information before you go. A weekday tour, a football weekend, and a graduation day can feel like three different versions of the same hill.
