Key West Custom House keeps federal paperwork in a red-brick landmark
Key West's Custom House started with customs, court, and post-office work, then became a museum that keeps the island's federal and maritime story visible.
The Custom House is a good reminder that Key West was not always just vacation streets and sunset crowds.
The Key West Art and Historical Society traces the building to federal customs work near the harbor. The larger red-brick building opened in 1891. It housed customs offices, the district court, and the post office. The building also handled court matters tied to rum running, ship salvage, and the 1898 sinking of the USS Maine in Havana harbor.
That history fits Key West. The island has long had water work, trade, law, weather, wrecking stories, Navy presence, visitors, and people moving between countries. A customs house belongs in that mix. It tells you the harbor was not only pretty. It was watched, taxed, argued over, and written into files.
Today the building works as the Key West Museum of Art and History. That shift is part of the story too. Old federal paperwork space became a public culture space.
Before going, check the museum’s current hours and exhibits. If you are already near Mallory Square, give the building a look from outside even if you do not go in. The shape, brick, arches, and harbor setting help explain why Key West’s civic story looks different from a courthouse square inland.
