Gainesville gave Gatorade its first sideline

Gatorade began at the University of Florida as a practical answer to heat, football practice, and tired players.

Gatorade sounds like a brand first, but in Gainesville it started as a hot, sweaty football problem.

In 1965, University of Florida researchers worked on a drink for players who were losing water, salt, and energy in Florida heat. The team was led by Dr. Robert Cade at the UF College of Medicine. The drink was first tested near what is now the marker site, then used by the Gators during the 1965 season.

The story is easy to picture because it started so plainly. It was not born as a shelf full of flavors. It began as a sideline answer to a local problem: hard practice, heavy heat, and bodies that needed more than water.

Gainesville still carries that mix of college sports, research, medicine, and Florida weather. The name stayed tied to the Gators, but the idea moved far beyond campus.

If you want to see the spot, start with the marker and a campus map. Check event parking before you go, because game days and big campus events can change the whole area around the O’Connell Center.
