Florida vessel registration is separate from the boating card

A Florida boating safety card and a vessel registration answer different questions for boat owners and operators.

A boating safety card is about the operator. Vessel registration is about the boat.

That split can surprise people who move to Florida with a boat, buy one here, or use a family boat at the coast. The safety card question depends on who is operating the vessel and the birthdate rule. The title and registration question depends on the boat, owner, motor, papers, and tax collector paperwork.

The decal is not just decoration. It shows the registration side has been handled for that vessel. A paddle craft, a motorboat, a personal watercraft, and a federally documented vessel may not land in the same bucket.

Start with FLHSMV’s vessel pages, then check with the county tax collector before a purchase, transfer, or move. Bring the title, bill of sale, hull information, proof of ownership, and any prior registration records that fit the situation.
