Florida State Archives research starts with a catalog plan

Florida State Archives research works better when you check the catalog, record type, reading-room details, and contact path before expecting one quick answer.

Old Florida records do not all live in one neat search box.

The State Archives of Florida holds state records, local records, private papers, photographs, and other materials tied to Florida history and government. That can help with family research, property questions, school records, agency history, old photos, maps, and projects that need more than a quick web search.

Start with the catalog and the record type. A name, town, agency, date range, school, prison, business, or county can point you in different directions. Some material may be online. Some may need a reading-room visit, staff help, or a request with enough detail for someone to find the right box.

Before planning a Tallahassee trip, check the research page, hours, contact information, and any visit steps. Write down call numbers, names, dates, and collection titles before you go. A little prep can turn an archive visit from a guessing day into a real search.
