Florida spiny lobster season moves boats and dock talk

Spiny lobster season gives the Keys and South Florida a busy water calendar, with sport season, regular season, size rules, bag limits, and no-take areas to check.

Spiny lobster season can make South Florida feel like everybody suddenly has a boat plan.

The 2026 sport season is July 29 and July 30. That special two-day season falls on the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday of July each year. The regular season runs August 6 through March 31. The size rule, bag limit, license, permit, and closed-area checks all matter before anyone starts counting tails.

This is especially true in the Keys. Monroe County has tighter details than some other parts of Florida. For the 2026 sport season, the daily bag limit is 6 per person in Monroe County and Biscayne National Park, and 12 per person for the rest of Florida. Regular season rules are different again. Some parks, sanctuaries, and no-take areas are closed to harvest.

That sounds like a lot, but it has a simple reader lesson: lobster season is not just “go grab dinner.” It is a calendar, a measuring gauge, a license check, a ramp plan, a weather check, and a map check.

For visitors, book carefully and ask questions before assuming a charter, rental boat, or dock rumor has the rule right. For residents, keep the FWC page handy each season. Lobster days can be fun, but the best ones start with the boring checks already done.

Where to see it
