Florida old photos need the rights and credit check

Florida Memory makes old photographs easier to find, but reuse still deserves a check for credit, custody, rights, and the way the image will be used.

Florida Memory is one of the easiest ways to fall into old Florida for an hour. A search can turn up beach scenes, school photos, storefronts, parades, family portraits, farms, roads, hotels, and towns that look both familiar and gone.

Finding a photo is not the same as clearing every use of it. The practical check is credit, custody, rights, and purpose. A school project, family binder, local exhibit, book, ad, website, or product label can each raise a different question. Some images may be simple to cite. Others may need a closer look at the ordering page or a question to the State Library and Archives.

Before using an old Florida photo, check the item record, requested credit line, any rights note, and whether you need a higher-quality copy. Save the item link with your notes so you can find it again. If the use is public or commercial, ask before assuming the image is clear.

The nice part is that the search itself is still fun. Just keep the paper trail with the picture. Future-you will be glad when the caption, credit, and source are already in the folder.
