Florida nonprofit donation registration is separate from Sunbiz
A Sunbiz nonprofit filing creates the entity record, while asking for donations in or from Florida usually brings a separate annual FDACS filing.
Starting a Florida nonprofit can look like one filing, but the path soon splits. Sunbiz creates or updates the corporation record. That filing alone does not settle the rules for asking people to give money.
FDACS handles the donation side. As a general rule, anyone who asks for donations in or from Florida must register there and renew each year. Some groups are exempt, and some small groups use a shorter filing.
That small-group path is not based on dollars alone. It is for groups that received less than $50,000 in the prior year, use unpaid people for fundraising, and do not use a professional fundraiser or a business running a charitable sales promotion with them.
Before asking for money, decide whether the group needs the regular filing, the small-group filing, or an exemption. Keep that answer with the Sunbiz record, renewal date, receipts, and required public notice so the two filing lanes do not get mixed together.
