Florida’s state gem is moonstone. That sounds like a geology choice at first, but it really points toward the Space Coast.
The state made moonstone official in 1970, right after the Apollo years had made Florida launches part of the whole country’s memory. NASA’s Kennedy Space Center grew out of the Apollo lunar landing push on Merritt Island, and the launch story still shapes Brevard County today.
That makes moonstone a different kind of state symbol. It is not only about what comes out of Florida ground. It is about what left Florida ground. The choice ties a small gem name to rockets, countdowns, scrubland, launch pads, causeways, and crowds watching the sky from the coast.
It also helps explain why the Space Coast feels different from other beach areas. The water is still there, but the local story includes engineering, federal land, launch traffic, science jobs, and families who plan errands around a rocket schedule.
