Florida's moonstone state gem points back to the Space Coast
Florida's official state gem is moonstone, a space-age choice that points more toward Kennedy Space Center than a normal rock shop.
Florida’s state gem is moonstone. It sounds like a rock choice, but the reason is a Space Coast story.
Florida made moonstone official in 1970, while Apollo was still under way and after Apollo 11. The state chose it to honor the Moon missions launched from Kennedy Space Center in Brevard County.
That makes it a different kind of state symbol. Moonstone is not native to Florida. Despite its name, it is not a rock from the Moon either. The gem points instead to what left Florida ground: rockets, crews, spacecraft, and the work that still shapes the coast.
Kennedy Space Center is on Merritt Island in Brevard County. It is not inside the City of Cape Canaveral. To follow the symbol in person, use the exact visitor address. Check current NASA and visitor information before building the day around a launch.
Where to see it
Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and Space Coast history stops in Brevard County. Check current tickets, launch schedules, traffic, and visitor hours before building a trip around space history.
