Florida flooded vehicle checks start with the VIN

Florida flood-damaged vehicle checks start with the VIN, title brands, and records beyond a clean-looking car.

After a Florida storm, a used car can look cleaner than its history.

A vehicle identification number, or VIN, is the starting point for checking a Florida title record. The state’s Motor Vehicle Information Check can help confirm the vehicle description and look for title brands when the vehicle is titled in Florida. The national title system can add title, odometer, brand, and theft-history clues from other places.

Flood damage is not always obvious on a quick test drive. A car may have fresh scent, new carpet, or a clean listing photo. The papers may still show a brand, a recent title move, or a history that needs more questions.

Before paying, match the VIN on the car, title, listing, and search result. Look for flood, salvage, rebuilt, junk, or other brand words. Then compare that with the inspection, smell, carpets, trunk, under-dash areas, and service records. If the story does not line up, slow down before money changes hands.
