Florida's $225 initial-registration fee is separate from the plate

The metal plate itself costs $28. A routine renewal does not repeat the $225 fee, and replacing the metal plate on an existing registration does not by itself trigger it. A qualifying Florida plate transfer to a replacement car can also avoid the initial fee, although title, transfer, and other applicable charges remain.

Replacing a car and adding another car are different transactions. If you sell the old car and transfer its eligible Florida plate, the initial fee generally does not apply. If you keep the old car on the road and add a second one without another eligible record or exemption, the second registration can carry the $225 charge. Paying it once is not a lifetime exemption for every car you buy.

An old Florida registration record can matter even when you no longer have the plate. Bring that record to the service center for review; FLHSMV’s procedure calls for an exemption affidavit in some circumstances. Family transfers, military situations, and a previous car placed in storage have specific conditions, so the office needs the facts rather than just an assurance that you once had a Florida tag.
