Florida disabled veteran plates need the right parking lane

A Florida disabled veteran plate, wheelchair plate, parking permit, and specialty military plate can look related, but the papers and parking treatment may not be the same.

A veteran plate can carry a lot of meaning, but the exact plate still matters.

Florida has separate lanes for veteran marks on a license or ID card, disabled veteran plates, wheelchair-symbol plates, disabled parking permits, and military or specialty plates. Those words can sound close at the counter. They do not do the same job.

One common mix-up is thinking any military-style plate works like a disabled veteran plate or wheelchair-symbol plate. It may not. Some plate choices change more than the look of the tag. A specialty or military plate chosen instead of a DV plate may not carry the same parking or access treatment.

Before changing plates, ask the tax collector or license plate office what the exact plate does and does not do. Bring the eligibility paper, vehicle registration, insurance proof, and any disabled parking permit paper that applies. If the point is parking access, fee treatment, or the wheelchair symbol, say that plainly. The plate choice should match the need.
