Florida Citizens depopulation letter needs a careful choice

A Citizens depopulation packet can affect whether a policyholder stays with Citizens or moves to a private-market offer.

A Citizens depopulation packet is not junk mail to toss on the counter.

Citizens uses this program to move some policies to private-market companies. The packet can include an offer, a code, and a choice step. For personal lines, the price of the offer can affect whether the policy can stay with Citizens.

Do not read only the premium. Read the company name, coverage, deductibles, inspection needs, mortgage notice, flood questions, and the deadline. A lower price is not the whole answer. A higher price may still need a careful look if the coverage is different.

Call the agent with the letter open. Ask what happens if you choose the offer. Ask what happens if you try to stay. Ask what papers the new company may want.

Save the packet with the policy, declarations page, wind form, roof papers, flood policy, and lender messages. Florida insurance files are easier when the letters stay in order.
