Florida boat rentals start with the livery permit

A Florida boat, jet ski, kayak, paddlecraft, sailboat, or houseboat rental can carry a state livery permit check behind the fun.

Florida boat rentals can look as simple as a dock, a clipboard, and a good weather window.

There is more going on behind the counter. FWC treats many paid vessel rentals as liveries. That can include motorboats, personal watercraft, paddlecraft, sailboats, and houseboats when the renter is taking the vessel out on Florida waters without a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain supplied with the boat.

The livery operator permit is issued by FWC at no cost, but it is still a real business check. The operator has to keep the needed forms and records together. Insurance can matter. The vessel list can matter. Local business paperwork can matter too.

For a renter, the simple move is to ask whether the rental business is permitted and how it handles the safety walk-through. Ask where the life jackets are, what water area is allowed, what weather cancels the trip, and what number to call if the boat has trouble.

That small pause does not take the fun out of the day. It helps the fun start with the right people, the right gear, and fewer dockside surprises.
