Egmont Key keeps Tampa Bay's island fort story offshore

Egmont Key State Park adds lighthouse, fort, refuge, and ferry-planning context to the mouth of Tampa Bay.

Egmont Key is close to Tampa Bay, but it still asks you to plan like you are going offshore.

Florida State Parks ties the island to a lighthouse first completed in the 1840s. The same history points to storm damage, military use, and the island’s role near the bay entrance. The park page also carries current access notices. Those details matter because structures and areas can be closed even when the island itself is open.

That is the practical way to think about Egmont Key. It is not just a pretty boat ride. It is lighthouse history, Fort Dade remnants, wildlife refuge land, beaches, sun, and very limited services in one exposed place.

Before going, check ferry details, weather, water conditions, closures, bathrooms, shade, water, and posted rules. Egmont Key is more rewarding when you treat it like a small island with history, not a beach park with a parking lot.
