Tampa started Outback as a local restaurant idea

Outback Steakhouse opened its first restaurant in Tampa in 1988 before growing into a much larger casual-dining brand.

Outback Steakhouse sounds like it should have started far from Florida. The first one opened in Tampa.

In March 1988, four founders opened the first Outback Steakhouse with an Australian theme and a casual dining feel. The idea was not to teach people about Australia. It was to create a relaxed restaurant brand that stood out from other chains.

The Tampa origin is a little funny in a good way. A Florida city helped launch a well-known Australian-themed restaurant brand in the United States. The company behind it, Bloomin’ Brands, is still tied to Tampa, so the story stays local even after the restaurants spread far beyond Hillsborough County.

For someone reading Tampa as a business city, this belongs next to the port, cigars, finance, health care, sports, and tourism pieces. Tampa does not have just one business personality.

If you want to follow the origin, check current company history before planning around one restaurant. Chains change locations and buildings over time. The business story may be easier to track than the original dining room.
