Disney Wilderness Preserve keeps Kissimmee close to headwaters

The Disney Wilderness Preserve protects a large Nature Conservancy landscape of longleaf pine flatwoods, wetlands, trails, and Lake Russell near Kissimmee.

The Disney Wilderness Preserve is a good reminder that the Kissimmee area is not only theme-park roads and vacation houses.

The Nature Conservancy describes the preserve as 11,500 acres of protected land, with longleaf pine flatwoods, wetlands, oak hammocks, trails, wildlife habitat, and a Lake Russell overlook. The name can throw people off. This is not a ride or a resort stop. It is a conservation landscape on the edge of Central Florida growth.

That makes it a helpful place to know. Around Orlando and Kissimmee, water does not stay neatly inside one neighborhood. Wetlands, lakes, flatwoods, ranch land, and restored habitat all help tell the larger headwaters story. The preserve gives that idea a real place to stand.

Before visiting, check The Nature Conservancy page for access, trail details, events, weather, and closures. Treat it like a preserve first. The quieter you move, the more the place makes sense.
