Dagny Johnson keeps Key Largo's hammock story standing

Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park protects a major tropical hardwood hammock, trails, rare species, and a development-that-did-not-happen story.

Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park is one of those places where the quiet is part of the story.

The park protects one of the largest tracts of West Indian tropical hardwood hammock in the United States. It was once slated for condominium development. Now it protects rare plants and animals, including wild cotton, mahogany mistletoe, and the American crocodile.

A walk here feels different from a normal Keys stop. Instead of bridge views or open water, the park gives shade, plant names, bird sounds, paved trail sections, and a close look at a tropical hammock.

Check the current park page before going. Trail access, guided tours, paved-route details, hours, fees, heat, bugs, and closures can shape the visit.

For Key Largo, Dagny Johnson is a quiet counterweight to boats, reefs, restaurants, and highway traffic. It shows the island’s land side, not just its water side.
