Chassahowitzka WMA keeps the Gulf coast wild behind Homosassa

Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area gives Citrus and Hernando counties sandhill, scrub, swamp, wildlife viewing, trails, and permit details to check.

Chassahowitzka is the kind of name that tells you the Gulf side of Florida has deeper layers than the boat-ramp map.

The wildlife management area has rare sandhill, scrub, and hardwood swamp country about 15 miles south of Crystal River. Visitors may hike, bike, watch birds and wildlife, and use roads or trams where they are open. Hunting and waterfowl seasons are also part of the area calendar.

This is where the planning matters. A wildlife management area is not the same as a city park with one set of simple rules. Check permit details, area status, vehicle-use guidance, hunting seasons, dog rules, and current notices before you go.

That does not make Chassahowitzka hard to enjoy. It just means the best visit starts with the FWC page, not with a guess from an old map app.

For Homosassa, Citrus County, and nearby Hernando County, the area keeps a wild inland edge behind the springs, seafood places, and coastal roads. It makes the coast feel bigger.
