Blue Spring manatee season changes the visit
Blue Spring State Park is a major Volusia County spring, and winter manatee protection can change what visitors can do.
Blue Spring gives Volusia County one of Florida’s clearest examples of how a spring visit changes by season.
The spring flows into the St. Johns River and holds steady, cool water. In warmer months, visitors may plan around swimming, paddling, trails, and picnicking. In winter, the manatee protection side becomes central. The park has tracked a large increase in wintering manatees over time, and access can change when manatees are using the spring run.
That does not make the park complicated. It just means the visit should start with the current park page, not with a fixed idea of what happened last time.
Check manatee season, swimming status, capacity notices, hours, fees, and alerts before you go. If the water is closed, the boardwalk and viewing areas can still help you understand why the spring matters. The best visit is the one planned around the season that is actually happening.
