Venetian Pool is Coral Gables quarry turned swim day

Venetian Pool in Coral Gables turns an old quarry idea into one of Florida's most memorable public swimming places.

Venetian Pool sounds almost too odd to be a city pool.

Coral Gables says the pool has been enjoyed since 1923 and is fed by spring water from an underground aquifer. It holds more than 820,000 gallons, is refilled daily, and has waterfalls and cave-like grottos. That is a long way from the plain rectangle many people picture when they hear “public pool.”

The place fits Coral Gables because the city is known for planned beauty and Mediterranean-style details. Venetian Pool takes that idea and makes it usable. You do not just look at the design. You swim through it, sit beside it, and feel how a city can turn infrastructure into a civic landmark.

This is still a public facility with real operating rules. Before going, check hours, admission, closures, swim requirements, and whether tickets or capacity limits affect the day. The charm is real, but the practical details matter. Plan it like a city-run attraction, not like a neighborhood pool you can wander into any time.
