Torreya State Park puts Liberty County on the bluff

Torreya State Park near Bristol shows a hillier side of Florida, with Apalachicola River bluffs, a rare tree, and the moved Gregory House.

Torreya State Park is a good reminder that Florida is not all flat sand and beach roads.

The park sits near Bristol on high bluffs above the Apalachicola River. It is named for the rare torreya tree, and the land has the kind of slope and shade that can surprise people who mostly know peninsula Florida. The park also keeps the Gregory House, a historic home tied to the river region.

The house has its own story. Florida State Parks offers guided tours, and the tour schedule is limited enough that it is worth a look before you go. Check current tour times before making the drive. If the house is open, Torreya becomes part nature stop, part old river settlement story. If it is not, the bluffs, trails, and views still make the park feel like a different Florida.

For Liberty County, Torreya matters because it gives the county a strong public place on the map. It is not loud or flashy. It is hill country by Florida standards, with a rare tree, a river edge, and a house that asks you to slow down and picture the Apalachicola before highways did the explaining.
