Tarpon Springs Safford House keeps old home life in the historic district

The Safford House shows Tarpon Springs through an 1883 historic home, family rooms, local restoration work, and the quieter side of a sponge-town visit.

Tarpon Springs is famous for sponge docks, Greek food, and the Anclote River. The Safford House gives the city a quieter home story.

The house dates to 1883 and sits in the historic district off Grand Boulevard. Tarpon Arts presents it as the restored home of one of the city’s early developers. It is also a late-1800s Florida vernacular house. The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is owned by the City of Tarpon Springs as a museum.

That makes it different from a quick waterfront stop. The rooms, furniture, family items, and restored spaces show how an older Florida home could hold family life, town life, and public life at once. Anson Safford had been territorial governor of Arizona. Soledad Safford adds another layer to the family story. Mary Jane Safford, his sister, was the town’s first doctor.

If you want to understand Tarpon Springs, check current tour hours and pair the docks with this house if time allows. One shows the working-water side. The other shows the home side of an old Gulf town.
