Sunken Gardens keeps St. Pete's old roadside garden alive
Sunken Gardens gives St. Petersburg a living garden story from the old roadside-attraction era, with tropical plants, birds, and a restored history center.
Sunken Gardens sits right in St. Pete, but it feels older than the streets around it.
The garden is tied to the Turner family. They created it and ran it for almost 100 years over three generations. Sunken Gardens now has a History Center in its original 1940 entrance and gift shop. The exhibits look back at the garden’s Old Florida roadside-attraction years, when a good sign, a strange stop, and a lush patch of shade could pull families off the road.
That history makes the garden more than a pretty plant stop. It shows a softer, slower St. Pete. The city has towers, parks, museums, and big event weekends now. The plants and birds are still the easy reason to go, but the old entrance gives the place its memory.
Check current hours, tickets, events, weather, and accessibility before visiting. A quiet walk here can make St. Pete feel less rushed, especially if the day has already been full of traffic, sun, or beach plans.
