Sanibel beach parking: prices, payment, and beach choices

For a day at a Sanibel public beach, you can pay by the hour without buying an annual permit. The city’s rate is $5 an hour, and the charge applies around the clock. That includes Turner Beach on Captiva; the boat ramp has a different fee system.

Paying for your parking

The old pay stations are out of service, so plan to use the city’s mobile payment system. Open the official list of parking lots, choose the park where you have parked, and follow its payment link. Match the lot and vehicle details before confirming payment.

With an international phone, use the web-payment links above. The text-message option only works with U.S. phones; the city’s parking FAQ directs international visitors to that same lot directory.

Unused paid time can move with you between the city’s public beach parks until it expires. That does not extend to every nearby parking system: time bought at Alison Hagerup Beach Park on Captiva is not valid at Sanibel’s parks or Turner Beach.

Three beach choices

Lighthouse Beach: the island’s eastern tip

At 110/153 Periwinkle Way, Lighthouse Beach Park puts you beside Sanibel’s landmark lighthouse, with Gulf and bay shorelines, trails, restrooms, and outdoor showers. The lighthouse itself is not open for public tours, so think of this as a beach and shoreline walk rather than a lighthouse climb.

Gulfside City Park: beach and a shaded picnic

Gulfside City Beach Park, also called Algiers, is at 2001 Algiers Lane. Its shaded pavilion, picnic area, restrooms, and showers make it a useful choice when lunch is part of the beach day. The lot does not accommodate RVs or trailers.

Bowman’s Beach: allow for the walk

At 1700 Bowmans Beach Road, Bowman’s Beach Park has about a quarter-mile walk from the parking lot to the shore, including a footbridge over Clam Bayou. Keep that distance in mind when packing chairs and a cooler. Restrooms, changing rooms, showers, and a playground are available at the park.

For temporary access changes, use the city’s beach park notices. Paying for parking is not a reservation or a promise that every facility is available.

Permits and exceptions

Sanibel offers annual beach parking permits for residents and nonresidents, but the permit category determines the lots you can use. They are worth looking into for repeated visits, not a prerequisite for an ordinary hourly visit.

A Lee County Parks & Recreation parking pass is accepted at Bowman’s Beach and Turner Beach, but not at Blind Pass Beach across the bridge from Turner. A valid, properly displayed disabled parking placard or license plate allows free parking at city public beach parks, including in an ordinary designated parking space. The city’s FAQ explains both exceptions.

Two different places with “causeway” in the name

The county’s Causeway Islands, along the crossing before Sanibel, have free parking; the bridge toll is separate. Causeway Beach Park at 888 Sextant Drive is a different, city-run park with the city’s $5 hourly rate. Use the city park page if that is your destination, rather than assuming all causeway parking is free.
