Pensacola's North Hill keeps old homes above downtown
Pensacola's North Hill Preservation District keeps a quiet old-home layer close to downtown, with varied styles and local review for major outside work.
North Hill gives Pensacola a quieter old-home layer just above downtown.
The district sits between Blount Street, DeVilliers Street, Wright Street, and Palafox Street. Pensacola drew the local boundaries in 1973 and 1974. The district was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
The houses do not all tell the same story. The main periods run from 1870 to 1910 and from 1910 to 1930. Some later places still fit the district’s size, materials, and home-street feel. Queen Anne, Tudor Revival, Spanish Colonial Revival, Modern, and Bungalow styles can all show up in the same walk.
That mix helps Pensacola feel wider than the waterfront alone. The city also has an Architectural Review Board for work in historic and preservation districts. Before buying, changing, adding, moving, or removing something visible from outside, check the address and district line. Then check the meeting schedule and current form. In North Hill, the curb view and the paper file belong together.
